What is a Social Enterprise?

Entry Date: 7/3/25

When you hear the word enterprise, you probably think of a regular business, something that sells products or services to make a profit. But what makes a social enterprise different is its purpose. Instead of focusing only on making money, a social enterprise is built to solve a social or environmental problem while still running like a business.

At Uma Markets, this is exactly what we’re trying to do. We don’t just sell or raise funds; we use these efforts to directly support communities. For example, earlier this year, we organized a sports fundraiser. The money we raised didn’t just stop at funding the event; it also went toward purchasing equipment for children in Mindanao and sponsoring local football teams, enabling them to compete in tournaments. That’s the heart of a social enterprise, a business activity that creates opportunities, builds community, and gives back in a meaningful way.

Think of a social enterprise as a two-way road: One lane leads to profit, keeping the business alive. The other lane leads to purpose, creating a positive change in society.
Without both lanes, the road wouldn’t really go anywhere.

Social enterprises matter because they show us that business doesn’t have to be all about money. They remind us that every purchase can be powerful; it can support local farmers, protect the environment, or improve lives. By choosing products or services from social enterprises, you’re not just buying something; you’re also investing in a better future.

Support social enterprises like Uma Markets. The next time you make a purchase or join one of our fundraisers, know that you’re part of something bigger. You’re helping farmers, empowering youth, and growing a movement for change.
