What is fair trade?
Entry Date: 8/8/25
Fair trade is a global movement and trading partnership that puts people and the planet first. At its core, fair trade means paying farmers and producers a fair price for the work they do, while also ensuring that their working conditions are safe, dignified, and sustainable. It’s about equity, not just efficiency.
In many parts of the world, especially in agriculture, small-scale farmers and workers are often paid far less than what their products are worth. Without bargaining power or access to better markets, they’re left with very little to live on, sometimes not even enough to cover the cost of production.
Fair trade changes that by setting minimum price guarantees, promoting direct trade relationships, and often providing a Fair Trade Premium, extra money that communities can use for education, healthcare, or farm improvements. It also encourages environmental sustainability, like using fewer harmful chemicals and preserving biodiversity.

For us at Uma Markets, fair trade matters because it’s about basic fairness, giving farmers and workers what they deserve for the value they create. But it also goes beyond that. Fair trade:
-
Builds stronger communities, especially in rural areas.
-
Reduces exploitation in global supply chains.
-
Promotes environmental care and long-term thinking.
-
Creates deeper connections between consumers and producers.
When we choose fair trade products, whether it’s bananas, coffee, or handmade goods, we’re choosing to support a more just and sustainable economy. We’re saying no to child labor, poor working conditions, and environmental harm, and yes to a system that values people over profit.
Think of fair trade like a team sport. Everyone, from the farmer to the buyer to the consumer, plays a role. If one player is underpaid, overworked, or ignored, the whole team suffers. But if we work together fairly, the whole team wins. Fair trade is about making sure every player on the team has what they need to succeed, not just the ones at the top.
